If you ve bought a Rough Guide before, you know how popular these small travel guides are, but sadly their site is nothing but an advertisement for their paper products, with little to no native content.

The site seems well laid out at first glance, but the cities listing and countries listings both had some odd omissions.

Roughguides has some of the most popular destinations covered in their travel reviews, but they are lacking in originality.

Quality of content? Are the reviews detailed, informative and inspiring? .

Most of the material on this site, from travel guides to travel advice is directed at selling you their Roughguide book. The amount of actual content on the site itself is paltry.

Quality and quantity of images Are there enough images on the site to whet your appetite and are they of a decent quality? Can you load your own?.

The site has a few nice photos, but they are all stock images you ve seen a thousand times before.

What maps are on offer? Can you view maps of your planned destination and are they accurate and detailed? .

Roughguides has a listing of hundreds of maps but none are available to see on the site. You have to buy them instead. This could leave many a traveler stranded.

What else can I do here? We gave extra points to sites with travel videos, chat rooms, blogs, Facebook, mobile and audio..

They don t really have any video on the site.

The site is also lacking any community features. There are no travel forums, or even travel advice and travel reviews. It s just one big advertisement for Roughguides guide books.
